Raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, on the edge of the city, my routine was shaped by my relation to the natural wildlife that shared my backyard. Certain routes in the spring had been avoided during the changing seasons to avoid bears and wolves. I would spend my summers fishing with my grandparents. The fall would be interrupted with hunting trips. My life was dictated by my encroaching relationship with the fauna that cohabited my human space.
My work examines the relationship between the environments in which human and animals interact. My painting and sculptural work are set in the spaces of architecture, mythology, culture, technology and institutions. Through these spaces I investigate the paradigm of animal representation. The process of painting and sculpture allows me to expand the symbolism and forms of animal representation.
Past painting projects have been expeditions into symbolism of architectural and animal forms along with personal mythologies. These works have traveled though various forms of realism to the abstract to produce works that explored the breadth of human perception of the animal.
My continuing work is expanding on abstracting the animal form through the vessels of museums, zoos and storytelling.
